Care tips for Monstera Adansonii
Monstera Adansonii is known as a popular houseplant due to its unique beauty with distinctive holes on its leaves. This plant grows rapidly; is easy to take care of and propagate, and is suitable for interior decoration. Today, let’s have a look at how to take care of this indoor plant.
Light
This plant prefers indirect sun with low to medium light. You can place it near a window, but not on a window to keep it from direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause its leaves to dry or wilt.
Watering
Monstera Adansonii loves humidity, so you should check the soil regularly to maintain soil’s moisture; and to strictly avoid the soil from drying. Watering is needed when the topsoil is dry.
Growing medium
A perfect growing medium for Monstera Adansonii is the mixture of well-drained materials such as coconut coir or rice husk, perlite, and soil. Coconut peat should be added to retain the soil’s moisture.
You can make your own growing medium with 40% of rice husk or coco coir, 40% of coco peat, and 20% of vermicompost or soil. You can add perlite to improve the drainage of the growing medium.
Fertilizing
The best time of the year to fertilize Monstera Adansonii is in the Spring or Summer. Using the dissolving fertilizer on watering is highly recommended to keep your plant always green and healthy.
Propagation
You can propagate Monstera Adansonii in water or soil. Using clean scissors to cut a branch with 1-2 leaves including the nodes. Cut the branch 1cm below the node, then cut the leaf of the last node. If you cut 1 node only, no need to remove the leaf.
In water, put the cutting branch in a glass or bottle of water. Please make sure that at least 1 node is underwater.
In soil, put the branch in the growing medium, keep at least one note in the soil, and keep it moist all the time. You can place a plastic bag on the branch to keep the humidity, but make sure you remove it once a day for some fresh air.
Trimming
When the vine is too bushy, it’s time to cut some old leaves. Using a clean scissor to do the trimming. Yellow and dying leaves need removing as well. They are easy to pluck from the vine.
Repotting
Once per one or two years is fine. Using 1-size larger pot per each repotting for the plant to grow at its best.
Climbing support
As Monstera Adansonii has many aerial roots, it is important to provide some support for them to climb up to maximize their size. The climbing support is normally a pole with dry moss around it to create an ideal environment for the plant to grow.
